TAYLOR SWIFT STYLE — MET GALA

Before we begin with breaking down my predictions, I want to make sure we’re all on the same page about the gala’s theme this year. 

The theme is “Camp: Notes on Fashion.” And we aren’t referring to the tent and gathering around a fire type of camp. The reference here is to Susan Sontag’s same-named essay. Camp is the unorthodox, the ugly turned art, the hyperbolic made banal. As Sontag wrote: “the essence of Camp is its love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration.” 

I hope with this in mind, my choices are filtered within this “Bigger Is Not Better, Biggest Is Better” mentality and make a little bit more sense. 

Aka: The first TSS-er who comments “Taylor would never wear these” wins a prize. And the prize is Lady Gaga’s Kermit poncho.

And with that … ONWARD!  

  • VIktor & Rolf Spring 2019 Couture
    I will be thoroughly surprised if we don’t see one gown from this collection on the red carpet. This entire meme-driven puffed tulle ballgown collection is the epitome of Camp. Ridiculous, humourous, big, bold, and amazing. Everything Camp should be. I suggest styling with a topknot, hot pink lips, a glitter manicture, and perhaps some body glitter. Yaaaaas. 
  • Dolce & Gabbana Fall 2019
    This fur-lined robe turned gown should be styled with piles of pearls and metallic glittery makeup. It’s an elegant, luxurious, hedonistic version of Camp. Over the top in an old Hollywood glamour kind of way. Plus that colour would be divine on Taylor — as we’ve already seen. 
  • Tomo Koizumi Fall 2019
    Another entire collection that is Camp itself. Look 4 with its mini length and heart design also felt very Taylor but this full length rainbow light brite beauty felt more worthy of the Met Gala. 
  • Moschino Fall 2019 
    Another alternate of Bigger Is Better Camp and more to the … tacky 80s Barbie camp. If there’s a brand that knows this theme well it’s Jeremy Scott and Moschino. While Gucci is the brand of the night, I fully expect some Moschino and D&G looks to crop up. The big hair, ostentatious bows, overkill jewelry, and the gloves are all too deliciously tacky to resist. And we all know Taylor loves a metallic moment.
