Area ‘Crystal Embellished Gown’ – $1,900.00

Just yesterday I commented on what I perceived to be Taylor’s level of comfort and confidence to exude equal parts power, ease, openness, and femininity – her fashion being an extension of that and an opportunity for her to communicate that without saying a word.

This Time piece, the first proper sit down interview I feel we’ve had in some time, is the culmination of that. The feature is sweeping and possibly one of the best and fullest profiles we’ve had in some time that I’ll be taking a lot of time to mull over.

Given how long the interviewer has spoken with her over the course of this year for this piece, I can’t help but wonder if the usage of Area as a designer here is intentional as this brand has played a fashion role in a few of Taylor’s most memorable outfits this year. First in the form of embellished butterfly jeans in a post-split pap walk. Second in embellished shorts on ‘home’ turf at a Chiefs vs Jets game at a stadium she’s sold out three times this year.

Area ‘Logo Lettering Denim Shorts’ – $528.00

Another very fun (and slightly more spicy) outfit I’d copy + paste from Taylor.

Going back in fashion history, some of you may recall back in November 2021 when Taylor was a musical guest on #SaturdayNightLive that she wore a pair of crystal embellished plaid pants by Area that I said was a travesty we never got to see in full from the back due to the very fun crystal-trimmed slits that are signature of the brand. It’s very fun to see the logo lettering of ‘AREA’ spelled out here and visible thanks to the black bodysuit she layered underneath.

More recently, some of you may remember this brand as the one behind Taylor’s butterfly jeans – the ones she wore for those very first New York candids back in April 2023.

The post-breakup pap walk is a film we’ve seen before in the fandom – but it’s never looked quite this cute. It’s easy for your eye to flit around on this outfit – black and blue denim is a reliable classic that feels easy and simple, but it’s given a hot girl twist. The interplay of silver metallics between her chainmail bag and the butterfly embellished details (and yes, that necklace) (which no, I can’t confirm at the moment) on her jeans also keep a nice repeating motif that makes the outfit flow.

While we’re out here dressing for revenge, this feels like Taylors own take on Di’s precedent thanks to the subtle curvature of the top’s neckline (it’s not just a v neck!). And yes, scene-stealing jewelry included.

The mary jane silhouette feels like a callback to signature Taylor style – she’s long favoured a chunky heeled silhouette like these in the form of an oxford or platform shoe.

Perhaps this is penance for not getting to see the full picture of her Area cut out pants from her previous SNL performance but whatever made it happen – I’m glad it did.

There’s something to me that feels highly symbolic of the butterfly here, not just in its nod to Lover, but of its original concept of rebirth and renewal. If there’s one thing Taylor has done over her career, it’s perfected coming back. Whether that’s from the dead or stronger than a 90s trend.

I absolutely love that at first glance this appears to be a polished business-like plaid suit set. But upon second glance there’s crystal embellishments, a cropped midriff, and … oh, yeah. Slits in the ass. For a literal cheeky moment. I’m obsessed.
