The Eras Tour | Midnights section

Oscar de la Renta custom

The most direct reference to present Midnights fashion comes via this faux fur jacket – a designer take on the Free People faux she wears in the “Lavender Haze” music video.

The number of times outerwear is used as a method of quick change to impact the silhouette of a look (the duster added during her RED set) or shift the visual direction of an outfit (the Boss blazer added for “The Man”) feels like a fun folkmore reference to the chic outerwear that dominated those visuals.

It’s nice in a lot of ways that this tender, stripped down moment in Taylor’s set that’s dedicated entirely to her roots as a singer-songwriter brings with it two very familiar names.

The first being Taylor Guitars, the instrument brand that Taylor first entered the scene playing. This particular 6-string features the same koa wood that was her signature as a teenager, in addition to some byzantine inlays and a Florentine cutaway — just as her first guitars from this brand had.

The second, of course, being the wonderful Jessica Jones who was Taylor’s main costumer for both the 1989 and reputation Tours. I had noted that this was the one outfit of her entire tour wardrobe that stood out the most to me as unlike the others – and now we know why. It’s a joy to see her credited again as part of Taylor’s tour.

You’ll also notice in these shots the sparkle of her Roberto Cavalli two piece, worn during the previous 1989 section. It’s another smart move when it comes to efficient layered dressing for quick changes as Taylor can simply pop this dress on top of her clothes – coordinated to be tonally consistent – and the ruffled slit still means the sparkles get to catch the light on stage.

It’s brilliant.

In my predictions post, I had noted that I wouldn’t be surprised if we got beautiful goddess references to cottagecore in the vein of her 2021 Etro Grammys moment.

This mauve-toned, chiffon gown mixes bohemian elements thanks to its ruffles and flutter sleeves and lace with very subtle stage-worthy embellishments. Well done.

This stunning ballgown is an architectural feat and gives us a very strong throwback to Taylor’s Valentino ballgown on the Speak Now Tour. I had a lot of discussions early on in the prediction phase of this tour whether Taylor would incorporate new costumes into her wardrobe or allude to previous iterations of her tours of eras past.

This was a very well executed mix.

You’ll also recognize this designer from the “I Bet You Think About Me” music video.

The Eras Tour | evermore Section

Etro custom

It’s of zero surprise to me that this ruffled, tie-front dress that Taylor wears for the evermore section on tour is by Etro. You’ll recall me specifically name checking them as a point of reference for the designs of her folkmore sections as part of my TSS Predictions post. The Grammy performance really was a key jumping off point to nailing the bohemian goddess cottagecore look worthy of these albums visuals.

This is Taylor Swift at her most classic for the stage – a fringed, sparkly dress and boots. It doesn’t get more staple than that.

And I may or may not be emotional thinking about the longstanding history Taylor has forging iconic tour looks with this designer. You may recall the iconic opening look of the Speak Now Tour – also a gold fringe dress – was RC. A journey through the eras, indeed.

Paco Rabanne ‘Paillette Chainmail Sparkle Dress’ – $3,950.00

Who would have thought the first performance of the Midnights era would come at a The 1975 concert?

This is a classic Taylor performance outfit. Short, flirty, with a ton of sparkle to catch the stage lights. The chunky paillettes also feel like an in-line nod to the 70s style she’s been sporting lately and is a glammed up disco version of that.

David Koma ‘Plexi and Crystal Embroidery Polo Dress’ – $4,534.00

The polo look has been an ongoing motif for the Midnights era thus far. Mostly appearing on long sleeved knit sweaters or sometimes short sleeved ones in retro patterns. Here, the collared look gets a bedazzled upgrade for an awards night outing.

While the MTV Awards are typically a laidback affair I think this could also have served well for a late night talk show appearance. The updo also makes much more sense here so as not to compete with the collar of her dress.

David Koma Fall 2022

My very first instinct was how very inspired this look feels from her “Bejeweled” music video moment. The black bodysuit-like base with an overlay of fabulous jewels inspired by the Koma AW2022 runway.

Voluminous waves or a low sleek pony I think would have made for a more svelte hair moment.

But the most important thing here, of course – if you’re TSS-minded is the fact that the red jewels inspired from the original runway have been instead rendered in a stunning emerald green. A win for TSS!
