Taylor completely surprised all by choosing skin over sparkles. In an unprecedented appearance, she wore a crisp white croptop featuring cutout details and a long black skirt – featuring an extra flash of her leg via a thigh-high slit.

I’m extremely impressed by her daring to try something new and overjoyed that the outcome was as mature and statement-making as this ensemble is. I still find myself yearning for something in the way of colour (green or otherwise), but for now I’m pleased to not see a sparkle in sight and an undeniable sex appeal to take its place.

2011 Met Costume Institute Gala | May 2, 2011

J. Mendel gown

A lot of people consider this gown a miss but, this is the MET Costume Gala. It’s one of the most pivotal fashion nights all year. The theme for 2011 was Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty so, Taylor was one of the few stars who showed up not decked out in the best that the avant-garde designer had to offer. But she came pretty close to the theme in this cascading, black lace overlay organza gown.

As a guest of the designer and long-time wearer of the brand, Taylor unsurprisingly wore a J Mendel gown to tonight’s MET Costume Gala. What was surprising was how effectively Taylor took to the ‘PUNK: Chaos to Couture’ theme for tonight’s gala. 

Vamped, teased up hair — I spy a super cute pink streak! — edgy cut outs with cobweb lace, smoky eyes and a dark mani all add up to a punked out look.

I’m really glad Taylor showed up to the event this year since she missed out in 2012 — her 2011 J Mendel look is still one of the most memorable in my mind!
