Alexandre Vauthier Spring 2023 Couture

I’m personally always going to advocate for experimental looks in fashion. Or should I say FASHUN. Taylor has had moments over the course of her career where she’s stepped outside her norm to play and to try something on that is unexpected, but interesting. That is the beauty of fashion – in the play. And Alexandre Vauthier is an excellent designer to select for a look that’s alluring and fashion-forward. As this jumpsuit from the SS2023 Couture runway is.

It’s in Taylor’s lane from a wattage standpoint, but unexpected in terms of edge and silhouette. Taylor is typically agnostic to trends but it’s fun to see her flirt with the in-vogue hooded style, especially as we’ve seen her wear a few capes now across multiple music videos (“willow”, “Bejeweled”). Under the stage lights, the dark sequins look magnetic and Midnights-appropriate to me. Dark, complicated, moody – but with an undeniable starry shimmer.

I completely understand why she skipped the red carpet (fresh off a tour weekend I don’t blame her), but I have a feeling perhaps some minds would be changed on this look if seen packaged in a power stance on the red carpet. Part of styling of a look is not just in the fit of the garment and the accessories chosen to complement it – but also in the context and the physical embodiment of selling the look. This moment was mostly seen from the angle of Taylor seated, behind a podium, or posing to the side in friendly hugs with peers backstage. None of which I think put this sequinned jumpsuit in the best light – pun intended.

In terms of actual styling, the straight hair was the right call to coincide with the allover sleek and sharp outline of the jumpsuit. But a graphic liner or a smoked out eye and stronger lip I think could have leaned more into the futuristic edgy energy presented.

All in, I am always going to support any look that elicits varied responses and emotions. That is what makes fashion interesting and, for me at least, keeps me around.

Roberto Cavalli custom

I audibly gasped when I first saw photos of this asymmetrical bodysuit. The red, black, and diamond beads are pure art but the way the snakes intertwine and cover her body like tendrils create beautiful movement across the entire garment. The way it only exposes half of her body also gives the visual of being enveloped and becoming one with the snake, while still exposing vulnerable parts of human flesh. To me, this speaks to the duality of reputation itself – an album that’s all about the interplay between perception and reality.

The one arm silhouette is also an artful and subtle nod to the original version of her opening bodysuit by Jessica Jones from the reputation Tour.

The Blonds Fall 2019

The 70s theme of Midnights fashion continues in the most fun way with this disco-worthy gold jumpsuit. It’s equal parts fun and sassy thanks to that incredible low and open back. I even love the belt because it adds overall to the retro Studio 54 energy.

For me, as always, this is an opportunity to highlight the importance of styling and how dramatically it can impact a look. Imagine this styled with a sleek low ponytail, for instance. Or a fussy intricate updo. Or even waist-length pinstraight hair extensions a la Cher. It all changes the look in your mind, right?

So with that a big cheers to Taylor’s team tonight because all of the choices (the funky fun bracelet stacks, the fierce sword earrings, the sleek sandals that don’t compete with the lewk, the FLUFFY brushed out curls). They all worked in their own way to contribute to a TS70s dream.

Alaïa ‘Off The Shoulder Stretch Knit Jumpsuit’ – $3,590.00

Besides being like a totally important designer – it’s always been a personal dream of mine to see Taylor in more Alaïa. This marks her second skintight jumpsuit in recent weeks and between the two I think I like this more unfussy one more.

The slightly retro nod in the off-shoulder design recalls RED (2012) vintage feels.

Also? Her hair? The makeup? Dreamy.

Greta Constantine ‘Hockney Bodysuit’ – not available for purchase

Underneath Taylor’s lace bodysuit was an allover shimmery one that caught the stagelights during her performance (and also added an opaque base under the revealing pattern of the black lace).

The jumpsuit in question plays a starring role in Greta Constantine’s FW2021 collection and is worn underneath all of that runway’s lewks. You can more clearly see the bodysuit in full on the lovely Alicia Keys.

Sarah Regensburger ‘Wicked Lace Catsuit’ – $621.00

This lace jumpsuit isn’t even remotely what I expected for Taylor’s appearance but I am loving this rock chick witchy Halloween lace vibes. Quite fitting for a tribute concert to an icon like Carole.

I think a belt could have gone some way to adding shape and something additional to the outfit – though there’s almost something edgier about it being plain with her thicker, longer waves.

What do you think of this jumpsuit?
