TAYLOR SWIFT STYLE – LOVER FEST

Halpern Spring 2017

  • Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince
  • You Need To Calm Down
  • The Man
  • Blank Space

I think one of the hardest parts of this series was trying to determine what song would open the tour. Taylor has a strong history of choosing the opening track of the album also as the opening song for the tour (see: RED Tour, 1989 Tour, Reputation Tour). But as was the case when I was writing the TSS Lover Track by Track (it’s coming! it is coming SO SOON) I redid the tracklist, bumping “I Forgot That You Existed” from the opening slot; a position I think the song is unworthy of having. But in considering everything that the disjointed Lover era has thus far represented, I think the most poignant is the revealing documentary for which this song was named and the many choices Taylor has taken to be more vocally supportive of her beliefs and stances (Stonewall performance, voters rights, Equality Act, her entire Billboard Women In Music speech, Sco[ot]ter drama). This song is moody, mature, well-spoken and sets a really strong tone for where Taylor is currently at in her life.

In coupling other songs to follow “MA&THP” I thought about songs that took similar, bold (for Taylor) stances. “YNTCD” being her most outright support for the LGBTQ community (even more dedicated than the line in “Welcome To New York”), “The Man” which tackles her career-long sexist double-standards in the music industry and her personal dating life, and the iconic “Blank Space” which Taylor described herself as a song “so tongue in cheek, that if people don’t get the joke, they don’t deserve to have the joke explained to them.”

Beyond just all of this setlist consideration, I had to think of what that one outfit that could best fit in with all of these incredibly important songs look like — not just to represent the nature of these songs, but to also serve as the most photographed look of the tour (tour photographers typically only are permitted to take photographs during the first 3-5 songs of a show so as not to continue interfering with the concert-going experience). So it had to look good, be immediately recognizable and show-ready (all those stagelights) but also be bold, feminine, strong, Taylor Swiftian, and just a little bit gay. Enter: rainbow sequin jumpsuit. While I definitely have a good share of suits planned for later in the setlist, and one could have easily imagined a suit here to be worn during “The Man”, a jumpsuit felt like a great compromise.

TAYLOR SWIFT STYLE – LOVER FEST

This was such a bittersweet series to create. If you were around for it, you may recall I previously made an entire predictions series for the Reputation Tour which you can check out here. Unsurprisingly, one of the most-requested pieces of content since then has been a similar predictions series to Lover Fest/Tour. As we all know by now, of course, Lover Fest has been indefinitely postponed. But what I refuse to put off, even in this age of darkness, is the light of creativity and wonderment and discussion and thought.

I’ve said it many times, but I will say it again here: the goal of the TSS Predictions series has never been accuracy (though I work very hard to try to be as logical and thoughtful as possible and if correct guesses come about, that’s just a bonus to the real goal). The goal has, and always will be, fostering conversation and thought about Taylor and fashion and Taylor’s fashion. Which I certainly hope these choices do!

As always, there was the likelihood that even with Lover Fest moving forward most of her tour pieces would have been custom (as they often are). But if a global pandemic and an entire concert cancellation would not stop this series from happening, neither would the realistic nature of ready-to-wear vs custom.

So here we go.

P.S. For your convenience, I’ve also created a Spotify playlist of my proposed Lover Fest setlist for your listening pleasure while you read. You can listen to the TSS Lover Fest Spotify playlist here.

Bonus: Personal Styling Client Testimonials

The below is from a lovely client I worked with to develop a capsule collection. She was such a gem to work with and creating her feisty, but office-friendly, wardrobe was so much fun for me.

“I was so excited when Sarah began doing fashion consultations because my closet was in desperate need of a refresh. I chose the “Capsule” level because I was looking for high-quality, unique pieces that could be mixed and matched in many different ways and compliment my existing wardrobe. Sarah delivered above and beyond what I was expecting. She listened to my needs and really worked to find pieces that encompassed my style and felt quintessentially “me”, while also giving me new pieces that will spice up my look and make me feel like the best possible version of myself. I am so excited to start collecting and wearing the pieces that Sarah selected for me. Working with her was a dream and I highly recommend her for any of your styling needs!” — K.S.

But my favourite part of her testimony was:

“Sarah turned all of my looks into LEWKS”

YES!

If you’ve ever been curious about personal styling, I promise to do everything in my power to make sure you don’t regret making the decision to invest in yourself. I currently have a $20 and $50 tier options for a single lewk or a whole capsule collection.

TAYLOR SWIFT STYLE — GRAMMYS

Sunday would have marked Taylor’s return to the Grammys after a four year absence. Since originally writing this predictions post, Taylor has confirmed that she will not be performing nor attending tomorrow’s ceremony.

I put it as a vote to you all on Instagram if you would still be interested in seeing my predictions post. ‘Yes’ was a landslide winner — so thank you for that.

Let’s take this as an opportunity to dream to think about what would have been.

Typically, Taylor has stuck to metallics and neutrals in her right previous appearances at the Grammys. In support of 1989 (2015-16) she diverged into vibrant colour. To split the odds, I went with two colourful pieces and two more sparkly options.Let’s get down to details.

  • Atelier Versace Fall 2017 Couture

Dipping into a slightly older collection for this beautifully embroidered, rose gold blazer and pant set. Taylor tested out a non-gown silhouette at the 2016 Grammys (paying ode to that era’s distinctive crop top style with a bandeau top and full skirt). I can absolutely see a slicked, wet low pony and a dark bloody lip (similar to runway) styled with this set for an intimidatingly suited up feminine look. I would have chills.
  • Prabal Gurung Pre-Fall 2020

I would start crying and never stop. This would be an epically elegant Blondes In Yellow™ moment. The material and cut are so beautiful and svelte. Couldn’t you just imagine an updo with huge emerald-cut citrine earrings paired with this and perhaps some gold sandals?
  • Georges Hobeika Fall 2019 Couture

I’m dying for a cape-like moment from Taylor and think that she’s primed for one. This juicy raspberry colour would be stunning on her and I hope if it’s worn the sense to have her hair up, black onyx ear climbers on, and a glossy berry lip is styled with it.
  • Oscar de la Renta Spring 2020

This is the last OdlR gown I’m going to predict for a looooong time. This look combines the colour of her Gucci gown from the 2014 Gramys with the flowing plisse skirt of her Kaufmanfranco look at the 2013 Grammys (+ check the runner ups below for yet another blast to the Grammys past). This is very classic metallic-loving, princess-cut classic Taylor at her best.

Taylor’s revealing documentary Miss Americana will be making its debut at Sundance Film Festival on opening night, January 23 @ 9pm MST. Taylor will be in attendance of the film’s premiere.

My choices here reflect the typically laidback fashion at this film festival.

Note Taylor’s previous appearance at Sundance in 2012 when she wore a knit beanie, jeans, and boots from Anthropologie). Given that this festival also takes place in Utah — in January no less — fashion that guards against the cold is key.
