Taylor Swift Style – 2014 Met Gala

The Met Gala — well understood to be one of the biggest social (and of course, fashion) events of the year. This year, Taylor will be a guest of J. Mendel and thus will be wearing one of his designs.

While I maintain that Taylor will likely be wearing a custom ballgown to properly honour the designer behind this year’s theme (Charles James: Beyond Fashion), I’ve gone through the J. Mendel archives to pick some of my top faves as tribute to Charles James’ exquisite structural designs.

  • J. Mendel Pre-Fall 2013
    – A classic, full-skirted ballgown silhouette is instantly modernized by a splattered paint motif. A dress that harmonizes glamour with a more youthful, fresh flair.
  • J. Mendel Resort 2010
    – As soon as I laid my eyes on this gown, my breath caught a little bit. The Met Gala is all about drama and making an entrance. And when the theme of the night is white tie ballgown? Be prepared for some extravagant moments.
The floaty underskirt of tulle on this gorgeous yellow gown is offset by delicate folding on the outer peplum skirt and folded bust. The colour would also look divine against Taylor’s skin.
  • J. Mendel Pre-Fall 2012
    – Upon perusing the Pre-Fall 2012 collection, I was torn between choosing this nude gown that featured a fuller, more detailed skirt. Or this similar royal blue one with a slimmer skirt.
Ultimately, I had to go with what would lend itself better to Charles James. And those careful origami-like folds along the bodice and skirt screamed to be the superior choice despite the more quiet colour.
  • Charles James Vintage
    – Okay. So. This isn’t a J. Mendel piece. And no, Taylor will certainly not wear this beautifully constructed original Charles James gown. But DAMNIT I’m going to predict a green dress for every event until this woman retires.

What do you think TSS-ers? Which of my choices do you prefer? Or do you think Taylor will wear a custom gown?

— In a surprise move, Taylor ended up wearing a custom pink Oscar de la Renta design to the 2014 Met Gala instead of J. Mendel as was originally stated.

Steven Alan ‘Crossover Shirt’ – $178.00

After going shopping at the Steven Alan store a couple weeks ago, it was only a matter of time before Taylor wore one of his shirts. Here, it’s a striped buttondown with an interesting crossover twist.

Worn with: Ray-Ban wayfarers, Tod’s bag, Joe’s Jeans trousers and Prada heels

Taylor Swift Style – 2014 Academy of Country Music Awards

Tonight is the prestigious Academy of Country Music Awards! Taylor is up for five awards – including the biggest honour of the night: Entertainer of the Year. This is an event which almost necessitates a gown and tonight should be no different.

What was so difficult about choosing my predictions is that I have no idea where Taylor’s red carpet style is moving towards these days. And the ACMs tonight will mark Taylor’s very first major awards show appearance of her shortened hair so it’ll be exciting to see how she styles that as well. And how perhaps the new vision for the Album Five Era will (or won’t) influence her tonight.

  • Zuhair Murad Spring 2014 Couture
    – Taylor adores Zuhair Murad and lately, Taylor can’t stop drawing watercolour florals (and driving everyone crazy with “hints” that the next era will be filled with them).
This gown is just sparkly enough for Taylor but not so much that it loses any mature appeal. Worn with a sheer insert to cover up the revealing nature of the skirting, I’d love to see Taylor wear her hair either completely slicked back with minimal, glowing makeup or wavy and framed around her face. No necklace is necessary for that neckline.
  • Elie Saab Spring 2014 Couture
    – Something a little different. No sparkles. No jewel tones. No monochrome black or white. That square cutout in the neckline gives away a little bit of sexy appeal while the dramatic flowing skirt and blending colours keep this gown from being too “dark”. The perfect amount of drama.
Smoky eyes balanced by a pretty pink lip, a dark manicure and a fuschia-stone bracelet or ring would be perfect.
  • Elie Saab Spring 2014 RTW
    – For my sanity (and my fellow Greenies) I’m going to keep “predicting” green Elie Saab until Taylor cooperates.
    It’ll happen. One day.
  • Kaufmanfranco Fall 2014 RTW
    – Taylor loves a white gown. And she’s also proven from this year’s Grammy’s that she can look stunning and statuesque in a column gown. The beauty of this gown is its minimalism – and the slight hint of sex appeal with the cutouts around the bust.
Warm, bronzed makeup would be nice to see to balance out the clean, sharp crispness of the gown.

What do you think TSS-ers? Which of my predictions are your favourite? Or do you have your own gown in mind?

— The beginning of an era. Rather than a conventional full-length gown, Taylor officially kicked off the Era of the Crop Top in a J. Mendel black and white two-piece.
