Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) | July 7, 2023

Giambattista Valli Fall 2019 Couture

The next TV is here and with it, the return of curls!

Of the many things I’ve loved about the journey of the re-records is all the ways that Taylor pays homage to her visual legacy, while also subtly making adjustments in her imagery to indicate her growth and her journey. Not just as an artist, but a woman.

The original Speak Now cover is whimsical and fanciful – scrawling script and added on paint splatters set to an angled off-screen gaze curiously looking optimistically to a far distant future.

The (Taylor’s Version) cover retains all that whimsy in the frothy tulle of a designer gown, but feels softer and like a real model being sat for a painted portrait. The brush stroke add-ons to paint-ify the cover are more subtle and thus more effective, imo. The gaze looks to the viewer in a way that feels gentle, but careworn. Present and in control, but battle bruised regardless from the path she’s taken.

And did I mention the return of curls!

What a lovely cover that centers the artist and her vulnerable but brave self-written work.

What are we thinking of the cover?

Stella McCartney ‘Rectangular Sunglasses’ – $310.00
Stella McCartney ‘Frayme Medium S-Wave Flap Shoulder Bag’ – $1,530.00
Simkhai ‘Pandora Embellished Skirt’ – $390.00
Chanel ‘Back to College Loafer’ – $1,350.00

This skirt, when paired with a very closely matched top (getting shades of black to match is so hard), gives the appearance of a dress when it is actually sneaky separates.

Taylor has rocked many all black ensembles over the years and it’s always been the chicest complement to her red lip.

The repeated motif of chains here could certainly have a more symbolic read, but I like it purely as a styling detail that keeps the outfit cohesive but distinct.

Taylor has long been a lover of a loafer and worn many over the years. Leather, suede, heeled. The choice to wear Chanel, on the other hand, is more unfamiliar territory. She’s worn the French house often enough when styled for photoshoots, but rarely in her street style. I can actually only think of two Chanel footwear instances in all my years documenting her fashion. A pair of black leather oxfords (worn multiple times in 2012 – it has its own dedicated tag here) and one pair of cap toe bow heel pumps (December 2014).

Agolde ‘Criss Cross High Rise Jeans’ – $235.00 $164.00

Taylor is typically trend agnostic when it comes to her style. She largely eschews “it” bags or of the moment silhouettes in favour of pursuing her own thing (in support typically of her latest era).

So it’s very fun (and intriguing) to see Taylor rock trendy 90s-adjacent baggy denim, chunky gold jewelry, and thick sole.

The Eras Tour | folklore Section | Version 4

Alberta Ferretti Spring 2023 custom

I don’t think I have to expand to anyone which folklore dress is my favourite now. Taylor wears a (say it with me now) greeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen version of this SS23 Alberta Ferretti moment. And it is glorious and wood nymph fairy goddess-worthy of a folklore set.

I really enjoy the addition of the cape so that it slideshows more neatly with the other folklore gowns.

The Eras Tour | Speak Now Section (“Enchanted”) | Version 3

Elie Saab Couture Fall/Winter 2022

For years, I’ve felt myself longing and dreaming of a tour filled with costumes ripped straight from runways. Custom costumes are great and serve a function and a purpose. But nothing hits like couture. In every sense, the Eras Tour feels like a culmination of dreams and fantasies and joy and a career that doesn’t seem like it’s ever truly going to peak. She feels like she’s stretching herself comfortably and confidently into the ever-expanding space her star power is taking up – and it’s a truly beautiful thing to watch her unfurl every night on that stage.

This Elie Saab gown is a big shift from the larger ballgowns she’s worn previously for “Enchanted” – a little more fitted through the waist and bottom. That scooped bateau neck also reminds me of another recent near-off shoulder moment we’ve seen. And what a choice to wear sleeves … in Florida!

I feel of the three “Enchanted” dresses we’ve seen thus far, this one is going to be a bit of a marmite. I personally really like the textured appliqués and beading.

Vintage ‘Stone Harbor Sweatshirt’ – not available for purchase

That Russell Athletic logo could have made this sweatshirt belong anywhere as it’s a go-to piece to superimpose localized embroidery on.

My best guess is that Taylor – ever the nostalgic one – felt a pull towards this one for childhood memories spent on the Jersey Shore.
