Etro Custom Gown (pictured similar)

Taylor’s beautiful rich performance gown for her folklore/evermore medley at the 2021 Grammys is a custom fil coupé chiffon gown with paisley motifs and lace ruffles by Etro.

Truthfully my very first gut instinct upon seeing Taylor was: “How Florence Welch!”. This is definitely a dreamy boho gown I could see Florence rocking during a concert and I think it speaks beautifully to the music videos we’ve so far seen from the folkmore era.

The addition of the headpiece also neatly points to both the “willow” music video and the Fearless era, don’t you think?

Worn with: Cathy Waterman necklace + earrings and Art Tribute guitar strap

Christian Louboutin ‘Rose Amelie Ankle Wrap Sandal’ – $995.00

If you know anything about me it’s that

1. I love green

2. I love a good ankle strap heel moment

I’ve long said that Taylor should take advantage of opportunities to up her shoe game from the more classic/expected silver or gold metallic sandals she usually favours on red carpets so I was absolutely delighted by this romantic and girly choice in shoe that complements her dress perfectly.

One thing I will say about a short hemline is that it gives the shoe a chance to shine and these are an excellent styling choice that I love. If there’s anything more fun than an ankle strap moment it’s a BOW ankle strap moment.

As an aside, it’s nice that Taylor’s Glam Squad got to reunite at long last for a red carpet outing and that Jemma (Taylor’s hairstylist) got to create a hair lewk that very much honoured the space buns Taylor self-styled for the folklore album cover. I thought that was a nice touch to continue the album’s established visuals.

Oscar de la Renta ‘Floral Embroidered Tulle Mini Dress’ – $8,990.00

While none of my predictions included a mini (I definitely had an elegant full-length gown in mind for this big night), I did accurately predict the brand so I’ll take a partial win for that.

My predictions also noted that there was a possibility for the ‘fit to reference Lover, and I definitely think this lush floral dress would not have been out of place during that time. Taylor looks like she walked out of a flower field and the petal pink soft makeup is the perfect complement.

It’s romantic, it’s whimsical, and while being colourful it still somehow neatly bridges Lover to folklore in a very lovely way. The changes made to it from the original runway presentation include floaty cuffs and a slightly longer hem.

I could easily see this dress being worn to the AMAs (where Taylor has a stronger history of wearing minis), so while I’m still mentally attached to the concept of a long, elegant and impactful gown, this short and sweet mini as-is is very beautiful and also notably is an appropriate choice given the timeshift of the awards ceremony to be situated more in the springtime.

TAYLOR SWIFT STYLE – GRAMMY PREDICTIONS

Taylor hasn’t attended the Grammys in five very long years. And while her previous absences could be explained away by being in between projects and taking a break from the limelight (2017 and 2018) or being shut out of major award categories (reputation in 2019 and Lover in 2020), with folklore being up for six awards including Album Of The Year it would genuinely shock me if Taylor 1) Didn’t attend and 2) Didn’t have a performance lined up for “cardigan” on music’s biggest night.

The format of the show will likely follow the precedent set by this weekend’s Golden Globes in being a combination of select distanced in-person attendees and virtual appearances and speeches. Just as many celebs opted for glam moments at home, it would  surprise me if for such a major potential moment that Taylor wouldn’t attempt to coordinate with her glam team for a major moment worthy of a red carpet, whether she’s actually standing on one that night or not.

Since Taylor’s last appearance at the Grammys in 2016, she’s released four albums (reputation, Lover, folklore, and evermore) and has had only a handful of red carpet appearances. As a result of this long stretch in between truly glam moments, it’s possible my incredibly high hopes are out of step with reality, but if dreaming of Taylor in couture is wrong I will never willingly choose to be right.

Throughout most of Taylor’s fashion history, she has leaned towards metallics. However, I feel like a bold, bright, single colour statement is long overdue and would be an absolute treat for the eyes. That said, I’ve included a single sparkly gown as insurance.

With that in mind, here we go!

  • Antonio Grimaldi Spring 2021 Couture
    • I feel like Lover really got the shaft when it comes to appearances so if Taylor wanted to pay belated tribute to the pastel and the pomp and frivolity and fun and everything that era could have been, I feel like this gown sums it up but still makes it elegant and bold. A delicious glossy raspberry lip with a baby pastel pink matte eyeshadow lewk, fluorescent oversized hoops, chunky bauble rings and maybe feather wraparound stilettos should finish off this gown.
  • Özgür Masur Spring 2021
    • On Taylor’s first big night at the Grammys where she won AOTY (2010) she wore blue. If she’s dressing with intention, this beautiful pearl-accented blue gown would be a beautiful bookend to that moment should she do the inconceivable and win the category for a third time she would be the first woman to do so. Undoubtedly, in slideshows of this momentous milestone in her career, journalists and reporters covering the award will include photographs of that previous instance. A side by side of Taylor in blue gowns, winning the Grammy’s top award over the course of a decade (+1 year) would be so compelling and symbolic of her growth and trajectory as a genre-spanning artist. I’d finish the look with petal pink glossy lips, metallic smoked out eyes, and gunmetal pearl accessories.
  • Oscar de la Renta Pre-Fall 2021
    • I genuinely have a good feeling about yellow. And not just because of Blondes In Yellow™ but because it would tie in neatly with Fearless (Taylor’s Version) which also y’know happened to be her very first album that won Album Of The Year. If Taylor did win the category on the 14th for folklore it would shock me if she didn’t reference her re-records project and her quest to regain ownership of her life’s work that has meant everything to her and to be awarded for the first time in the category for an album that she actually owns would underline her re-recording journey and folklore as a work beautifully. I’d actually love to see a strong overly matte red lip and eyeliner look here with maybe a low chignon and velvet black bow in her hair for styling.
  • Valentino Spring 2021 Couture
    • Sparkles and sequins in a neutral metallic are a Taylor Swift forever trademark. It’s part of her legacy. The looser fit feels appropriate to her current approach to silhouettes and I love the longer sleeves with the off-the-shoulder design. Veronica Lake waves pushed to one side, a plummy lip, and shimmery brown shadow should complete this lewk. And obviously Jimmy Choo patent gold platform sandals.

What do you think Taylor should wear to the Grammys, particularly given how potentially momentous it would be for her?
