Favourite Outfits of 2020: Taylor Swift Style

Social – Instagram Story (7/23), MTV Awards (8/30), Miss Americana, Pride of Britain

One thing that was a constant throughout 2020 was Taylor’s online presence. Either when electing to communicate to fans either directly through her own Instagram Stories or while accepting an award virtually.

While this made identifying her fashion extra challenging (#ShouldersUp) it was also charming and admirable how Taylor led by example when it came to taking quarantining and social distance seriously in 2020.

The above are my favourite examples of Taylor appearing through her phone’s front-facing camera. The Dôen dress because if ever there was a brand that I would want Taylor to wear more of for this era, it is Dôen. The Derek Lam shirt beautifully brought out her eyes and absolutely glowing skin. The Aritzia/Reformation pairing was a great example of restyling a summery dress to get more wear out of it (something I definitely do IRL with my capsule wardrobe) and the final Free People top I think very much encapsulated the English tea ladylike vibes of the folkmore era. And she looked oh so pretty in it.

Music Video – “willow”

I loved seeing the return of a bold lip and the glowy inner corner eye makeup here was also a beautiful styling touch that was refreshing to see. The gorgeous tiara (that may already be my wishlist for my future not-planned wedding … maybe) I think offsets the curly bangs she’s been wearing this era very well and of course the dress itself is beautiful. That bow detail!

Photoshoot – evermore

When it came to deciding between these two album photoshoots, I definitely had a lot of back/forth. These two shoots have many similarities (woodsy vibes, killer outerwear, desaturated or black/white shots) but ultimately evermore edged out. The two plaid coats and the chicer, more tailored outfits spoke to me a bit more than the more country-esque and shapeless pieces from the folklore shoot.

Appearance – Sundance Film Festival

This will definitely go down in history as a very strong power move on Taylor’s part and that coincidentally hit very very close to my personal Sundance predictions (one of which Taylor ultimately wore for her Long Pond Sessions film appearance). The head-to-toe plaid, the wavy bob, the signature bold red lip, and the jewelry are all top notch.

The remaining constant over the last few years of this annual roundup tradition has stayed the same: I wish I had more material to work with.

What’s interesting is that in quietly looking back on this year, so much happened in Taylor’s career. She attended a few award shows, released two albums, two films, and three music videos.

But the defining factor I would say of Taylor’s style and her general train of thought this year has been ownership. This was the first time we’ve seen her take a concerted effort to control her image herself and take over the reins of her glam squad on the styling of her clothes, hair, and makeup in almost all of her major appearances this year.

I have always thought that fashion and clothing is an extension of our personal narratives and carries with it the power to make a statement and to communicate something through your very physical appearance. This year, the message from Taylor was soft and undone. Tinged with the English countryside in outerwear, lace, boots,  and jaunt hats on slightly mussed hair. All complemented by natural, mostly untouched beauty lewks. A woman coming into her own and in that ownership, taking control of the entire end-to-end experience of her brand and career.

In 2021, TSS will be marking an official decade of existence. A huge milestone that I hope will accompany more Taylor fashion to cover. But even with an absence of lewks, what this space will always be filled with is the kindness, the shrewdness, and the amazing support of the TSSers who like, who comment, who reblog, who send messages, who look on fondly from afar, and who go above and beyond to monetarily subscribe to the TSS Patreon. All of which, in equal measure, I’m endlessly humbled and grateful for.

With that.

Let’s get started.
