Badgley Mischka Fall 2008

The Met Gala is probably my favourite fashion event of the year and Taylor glittered at the 2008 ball in a Badgley Mischka gown. The theme that year was Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy which I don’t think Taylor exactly hit, but at least she was sparkling and pretty.

TSS QUARANTINE FLASHBACKS

The most forgotten Met Gala appearance, I’d wager.

I somehow want to imagine that Taylor thought the gold of this gown held some similarity to armour or a gold glittering shield? (#reach).

In fairness to Taylor, reviewing the 2008 red carpet coverage, very few people seemed to have even attempted to fit the theme of “Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy” so she gets a pass here.

Ralph Lauren Spring 2005 RTW gown

This isn’t most people’s favourite but Taylor just looks so deliciously old Hollywood I can’t resist. And the fact that she’s wearing a five year old gown to a high-profile fashion event is just so daring. This is one of my Top 5 favourite event gowns Taylor has ever worn.

The theme the year of this Met Gala was “American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity” and this was certainly reminiscent of old Hollywood glamour with the underpinned bob and red lips. This has long been a personal favourite of mine of Taylor at the Met.

2011 Met Costume Institute Gala | May 2, 2011

J. Mendel gown

A lot of people consider this gown a miss but, this is the MET Costume Gala. It’s one of the most pivotal fashion nights all year. The theme for 2011 was Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty so, Taylor was one of the few stars who showed up not decked out in the best that the avant-garde designer had to offer. But she came pretty close to the theme in this cascading, black lace overlay organza gown.

There’s something about this gown that I do love (that train, in particular) but indeed thought it odd that she wouldn’t have tried to get her hands on an Alexander McQueen gown to truly pay tribute to the designer. That said, Taylor was at the time (and still is) a strong devotee to J. Mendel so perhaps this was her way of paying homage to McQueen while still staying true to her favoured designers.

2013 Met Costume Institute Gala | May 6, 2013

J. Mendel custom gown

As a guest of the designer and long-time wearer of the brand, Taylor unsurprisingly wore a J Mendel gown to tonight’s MET Costume Gala. What was surprising was how effectively Taylor took to the ‘PUNK: Chaos to Couture’ theme for tonight’s gala.

Vamped, teased up hair — I spy a super cute pink streak! — edgy cut outs with cobweb lace, smoky eyes and a dark mani all add up to a punked out look.

I’m really glad Taylor showed up to the event this year since she missed out in 2012 — her 2011 J Mendel look is still one of the most memorable in my mind!

Thoughts on Taylor’s look, TSS-ers?

This night’s theme, as the original caption states, was “Punk: Chaos to Couture”. I think the words I wrote seven (!!!) years ago still hold true here. The cute pink streak, darker eye makeup and manicure, gown cutouts and cobweb lace all create a darker look that’s still classically Taylor pretty. An underrated example of Taylor conforming well to the theme and still managing to look like herself.

2014 Met Costume Institute Gala | May 5, 2014

Oscar de la Renta custom gown

As revealed earlier today by Taylor herself on Twitter, she stepped out onto the red carpet wearing a custom pink gown featuring allover embellishments by Oscar de la Renta.

While the front featured a simple a-line silhouette, the real drama came from the dress’ long, sculptured train.

As with many of the gowns from tonight, I feel a little letdown by the dress. Taylor looks lovely, as usual, and I like the glossy but textured waves of her hair, her glowing, dewy skin and the way the bodice creates a deep cut in the back. However, this won’t go down as one of my favourite looks from her.

I’m at least glad to see Meredith didn’t rip it to shreds during the final fitting.

Update (Feb. 15): You can actually purchase an unembellished version of Taylor’s gown via My Theresa here for $8645.

Worn with: Lorraine Schwartz jewelry, Edie Parker clutch and Christian Louboutin pumps

TSS QUARANTINE FLASHBACKS

Probably her most beloved (by the fandom) and well-known attendance of the Met Gala. Taylor revived this look in the “Look What You Made Me Do” music video

It is not my favourite Met Gala appearance for Taylor but she did execute the theme that year (“Charles James: Beyond Fashion”) beautifully. The night called for princess ball gowns, structure, and old school elegance. The architectural train and classic gown silhouette met that criteria well.

I think my favourite part of this appearance was the glowing makeup and hair which were both perfect.
