TAYLOR SWIFT STYLE – ERAS TOUR

70s Influence: I definitely expect references to the 70s Midnights aesthetic throughout her costuming. The question is how does one make corduroy stage-appropriate? Psychedelic prints and patterns, saturated tones, exaggerated crochet, fringe, and Gucci-esque disco influences all seem like fun costume possibilities.

Stars/Night: It’s a bit on the nose/literal, but I’d be surprised if we didn’t see some kind of reference to constellations, stars, and planetary movements that give reference to the haunted, evening aspect of Midnights.

Bejeweled, Natch: It isn’t a Taylor Swift concert without a requisite sparkly mini moment. I definitely expect at least one fringey sparkle dress somewhere and, of course, a very OTT production that references the corsetry and camp of the “Bejeweled” music video a la a leotard/bodysuit/burlesque moment.

Suiting/Jumpsuits: I demand a jumpsuit on tour. I simply need it. There are also just many opportunities to make this 70s-esque and I also feel like Taylor has really been leaning into tailoring, suits, and blazers the last few years. Plus with that recent gold jumpsuit from The Blonds a custom sparkly jumpsuit for tour doesn’t seem so far-fetched.

Cottagecore Goddess: While for the most part I expect the costuming to center on themes most relevant to Midnights, I also suspect special attention may be made to make sure there are costumed references to the album’s Taylor has yet to tour. Something in the nature of the beautiful Etro gown she wore for the 2021 Grammys performance that was shimmery enough for stage but had just enough flow and billowing sleeves to reference the wood nymph cottagecore energy of folkmore struck the exact right balance.

What are you hoping to see Taylor wear on stage and, equally important, what song are you most looking forward to hearing live?

TAYLOR SWIFT STYLE – ERAS TOUR

One of the most common questions I’ve been getting asked is what do I think Taylor will wear as part of her tour costuming on the Eras Tour. In years past – like for the Reputation Tour and Lover Fest – I’ve formatted these posts as individual looks, attached to the respective song I think that Taylor will sing while wearing the pictured ensemble.

This time, however, I feel like if I think about it too hard my brain explodes trying to imagine the setlist. I certainly don’t envy Taylor for having to navigate four untoured albums in addition to six full-length albums that host their own requisite number of hits that have immovable claims to any future setlist (“Love Story”, “Shake It Off” – I’m looking at you). I did do my best to pull together one that isn’t perfect but I’m proud of on the TSS Patreon here.

With that in mind, I’ve pulled together a moodboard of sorts that represent the general energy I imagine for Taylor’s tour costuming. (Spoiler: It always involves sequins). Sort of inspired by this very quaint predictions moodboard for what I then only knew of as TS7 but what we now can collectively call Lover. The fun of it all? That prediction post has mostly(?) come true. Just not in the way or in the timing that I expect. But what else is new from Taylor.

Keeping in mind of course that many (most/all) of her looks will likely be custom. But a girl can dream of ready-to-wear couture!

With that, I’ve broken down some common costuming elements into overarching themes.

Here we go!

TSS PREDICTIONS: 2023 GRAMMYS

I do have a tentative suspicion that Taylor will make an appearance at the 2023 Grammys, which are set for February 5. Taylor is nominated for four awards, but the biggest of them all is her SOTY nomination in the general field. This is one particular category at the Grammys that has eluded Taylor and god it would be so great if she won for “ATW10MV”.

Her other nominations are “IBYTAM” for Best Country Song, “Carolina” for Best Song for Visual Media, and the “ATW10MV” short film for Best Music Video. Given the obvious opportunity to nod to the RED era, I’m making my prediction choices based on paying that time period a modern homage rather than something that more obviously furthers the Midnights aesthetic.

With that in mind …

Alberta Ferretti Pre-Fall 2022

The inspiration for this look comes from the 2014 Grammys performance of “All Too Well” when Taylor wore a Pre-Fall 2013 gown by this same designer. It was such a special moment for Taylor and for us as fans to see this song come to be something greater than itself by being performed on music’s biggest stage. People who were not fans of Taylor’s may not have understood the decision to play one of the album’s deepest cuts, but isn’t it so wild almost a decade later to have a ten minute version of that song nominated for an award in the general field? And much like the bow design on this dress – what a gift winning that particular award for this particular song wearing this particular designer would be. There’s no other option but some big fluffy curls, a black winged liner, and a bold red lip – of course.

Michael Kors Spring 2023

This actually feels like a fun slideshow continuation of her gold 70s jumpsuit by The Blonds at the American Music Awards a few months ago. It ties into the current Midnights motif of sexy glam while obviously still being a very scarlet homage to RED. Super smoked out glam, a glossy red lip, and a slicked back bun would be great here.

Elie Saab Pre-Fall 2023

I could actually convincingly see this on Selena Gomez as well. The neck tie and floral embellishments seem up her girlish alley. But as we know, Taylor can rock the classically feminine styles so well. With the inclusion of the neck tie, I’d actually love to see a fun ponytail happen to go with the playful feel of the gown. Contrasting pink drop studs and a swipe of Dragon Girl (a watermelon red) for nostalgia would go with this so nicely.

Naeem Khan Spring 2023

It doesn’t feel quite like a Taylor predictions list unless I include a metallic. I can personally see Taylor turning this into a cap sleeve moment with big, teased hair and a dark, gunmetal smoky eye. Red lip, for once, optional.

Who do you hope Taylor wears to the Grammys (should she attend)?

TSS PREDICTIONS: 2022 MTV VMAs

With the MTV VMAs on August 28 and Taylor up for significant awards (alongside some highly suspicious attention and promotion being paid to the award ceremony) – it just feels like the time is right for some kind of news and an appearance from her.

Historically, her fashion at the VMAs has been very mixed. Most years it’s fun and short and edgy or interesting – an opportunity to step outside of the box. See: The Incident. Or: The Incident 2.0. But she’s also had two years where she’s opted inside the box with two full-length formal gowns. Add in the fact that Taylor’s style is such a mystery these days without a clear aesthetic driven by a single project – your guess is quite literally as good as mine for this award show.

(Pro Tip: If you want more fashion content, TSS Patreon subscribers get exclusive early access to predictions post plus extra bonus content).

But, as always, I’ll do my best.

And with that, here we go.

  • Christian Siriano Resort 2023: I really like this frock because it offers a best of multiple worlds scenario and ticks a lot of different boxes where Taylor’s style has lived over the years. Feminine and soft (the shoulder bows), a little sexy and saucy (the bustier cups and thigh slit), powerful and tailored (the neutral palette and elegant styling). I would love to see this with Taylor’s signature red lip and a shiny wavy pony with a black velvet hair ribbon for a kicky and girlish touch. And why not go all the way with some Aquazzura bow pumps to finish it off.
  • Alice + Olivia Spring 2022: This gown feels familiar but also fresh. The cutouts and delicate straps are reminiscent of her Balmain jumpsuit at the 2015 BBMAs and the skirt and overall shimmer a reminder of her most recent appearance at the BRITs. I appreciate that this is chic, clean, minimal, but with a bit of skin. A perfect balance for Taylor’s fashionable comfort level seems to be as of late.
  • Naeem Khan Resort 2023: Given Taylor’s love of trousers lately, I feel we are massively overdue for a suited red carpet moment. Taylor has previously worn a suit to the MTV VMAs – but that was a literal decade ago. I think it’s time to revisit the suit. We also know that Taylor has embraced over-the-top prints at this particular event in the past. Again, see: Incident 2.0. So a romantic floral (which is something she has worn many a time in the form of a tea-length fit/flare dress) seems very on brand. I would do a deep side part with old Hollywood waves, modern emerald-studded ear climbers, and a red lip.
  • Erdem Resort 2023: A kind of meeting in the middle between the Siriano and the Naeem Khan picks. A neutral colour palette but with romantic floral fabric and in a separates silhouette. This feels edgy but mature but feminine – all things that I think Taylor wants to accomplish in the here and now and specifically is appropriate for this particular awards ceremony. Tousled hair, smudged eyeliner and shadow, and a popsicle stained orange tangy lip with diamond studs and black diamond ear cuffs plus patent burgundy sandals would be my choices for styling.

What do you think of my picks? Do you have a favourite? And most importantly, do you think Taylor is showing up at all? Fingers crossed!

TSS Predictions: 2022 Grammys

We’re finally approaching the day of the rescheduled 2022 Grammy ceremony!

While Taylor’s attendance at the ceremony itself is sadly doubtful in my eyes (despite the AOTY nom for evermore), I wanted to honour the day with a predictions post if she indeed deigns to show up.

There are obviously many directions she could go, given the amount of content she released in 2020-2021.

An homage to the material nominated that night with a cottagecore, forested look for evermore?

A scarlet gown to honour the success of RED (TV)?

A fashionable Easter Egg to more clearly hint at which re-recorded album is indeed next?

A mix or none of the above because her fashion historically has not always correlated so obviously with the body of work she’s promoting at the time?

So many questions we probably won’t get the answers to. But that’s part of what makes predictions and guesswork and imagining wildest dreams of things so fun.

Here we go!

  • Monique Lhuillier Fall 2022
    – Consider this picking up where the 2021 Grammys left off. It has the soft, nature-infused whimsy of that folklore-ian lewk but elevates it slightly with a full-length hem and a bow at the neck. I can imagine an elaborate braided updo as a nod to the single plait on the cover of evermore but with dark stained berry lips and relatively bare eyes to add a slightly edgy feeling of romance to the look. I’d finish with satin burgundy pumps and more modern ear crawlers.
  • Christian Siriano Pre-Fall 2022
    – Splitting the difference between RED and 1989 with this spicy red co-ord pant set. I don’t think this lewk needs more than some red lipstick and black diamond or hammered larger statement earring and ring stacks. For hair styling I can see two directions of either polished city slick or a more edgy/tousled laidback feel. Pin-straight glossy shiny hair or alternatively a texturized/mussed wave would accomplish either of these things.
  • Rodarte Spring 2020
    – This feels like a nice nod to her very iconic 2014 Met Gala OdlR appearance but combining even more vintage sentiments that reference the original RED (2012) era. As Taylor has continued to cement herself as an unshakeable giant of the industry, this feels like a timeless way to solidify her icon status. Old Hollywood waves would be great here. [Note: Since this post was originally written in January 2022, Saniyya Sidney has worn this exact Rodarte pick to the Critics Choice Awards]
  • Zuhair Murad Pre-Fall 2022
    – Having offered up a sweet spot between RED and 1989, here’s a middle ground between RED and evermore. The nature-focused embellishments and that belt, while totally optional, give me vague cottagecore vibes which would totally work for the latest iteration of her style. Even her current relatively unfussy pandemic waves feel appropriate here, just with a bit more shape. I’d also love to see a red lip stain, softly mottled – like she’s had a glass of wine. Diamond stud earrings and somewhat glossy brown shadow would be great to add dimension.

TAYLOR SWIFT STYLE – 2021 MTV VMA PREDICTIONS

Another year, another music awards show passes us by with uncertainty as to whether Taylor will attend or not.

Regardless, Taylor is nominated for some of the biggest awards of the night including Artist of the Year and Pop Video of the Year.

The typical trend at a fun music awards show like this that lacks the prestige and pomp of, say, the Grammys is something short and sexy or at least edgy and interesting. Gowns are not the typical garb and typically the tackier the better is the name of the game.

Bearing that in your consideration, my predictions are below.

  • Lanvin Resort 2022
    – I think this may be my favourite of the four. It feels slightly futuristic with the glitch-in-the-matrix warping of the print around the bodice as well as the short hem-length feels perfect for the MTV VMAs. If it were up to me, some kind of contrasting graphic eyeliner in a mint or highlighter yellow, a sleek low pony, some kind of geometric ear cuff, and equally bright strappy sandals would be my styling suggestions.
  • Roland Mouret Fall 2021
    – Listen we had Fearless (Taylor’s Version) come out this year and Taylor managed to connect those dots enough to recently wear a yellow dress that sold out within hours of being identified. So I don’t think it’s too far of a stretch for her to wear yellow – especially as it’s a colour she hasn’t worn to this particular awards show in her history of attendance. This jumpsuit also feels sharp and, well, nearly tailored to a 31-year-old woman but that cheery colour works well for the season and energy of the event. Plus also Blondes In Yellow™, naturally. A juicy coral lip and maybe a few gold bangles feel like all she would need to finish this look off.
  • Gucci Resort 2022
    – Separated from the concept of era styling (let’s remind ourselves that Taylor didn’t wear red for every red carpet appearance during RED [2012]) this rainbow sequin skirt feels like exactly like the kind of frivolity and party and fun that the MTV VMAs are meant to encapsulate. It also adds in a little bit of sultry elegance with the lace bodice. Should Taylor wear it, she’d obviously forgo the matching gloves. A pair of strappy shiny red sandals like these would be great to tie in to some of the paillettes of the skirt.
  • Alaïa Spring 2022
    – Speaking of red and also colours Taylor has never worn on the MTV VMA red carpet, is this textured side-tie crimson snakeskin textured ensemble. The reference to both RED and 1989 is fun and evokes full Swiftian Clown Energy. I’d love to see this with mussed, tousled beach waves, smudged winged liner and a red lip stain.

Do you think Taylor will attend the MTV VMAs on September 12? If so, who do you hope she’ll wear?

TAYLOR SWIFT STYLE – GRAMMY PREDICTIONS

Taylor hasn’t attended the Grammys in five very long years. And while her previous absences could be explained away by being in between projects and taking a break from the limelight (2017 and 2018) or being shut out of major award categories (reputation in 2019 and Lover in 2020), with folklore being up for six awards including Album Of The Year it would genuinely shock me if Taylor 1) Didn’t attend and 2) Didn’t have a performance lined up for “cardigan” on music’s biggest night.

The format of the show will likely follow the precedent set by this weekend’s Golden Globes in being a combination of select distanced in-person attendees and virtual appearances and speeches. Just as many celebs opted for glam moments at home, it would  surprise me if for such a major potential moment that Taylor wouldn’t attempt to coordinate with her glam team for a major moment worthy of a red carpet, whether she’s actually standing on one that night or not.

Since Taylor’s last appearance at the Grammys in 2016, she’s released four albums (reputation, Lover, folklore, and evermore) and has had only a handful of red carpet appearances. As a result of this long stretch in between truly glam moments, it’s possible my incredibly high hopes are out of step with reality, but if dreaming of Taylor in couture is wrong I will never willingly choose to be right.

Throughout most of Taylor’s fashion history, she has leaned towards metallics. However, I feel like a bold, bright, single colour statement is long overdue and would be an absolute treat for the eyes. That said, I’ve included a single sparkly gown as insurance.

With that in mind, here we go!

  • Antonio Grimaldi Spring 2021 Couture
    • I feel like Lover really got the shaft when it comes to appearances so if Taylor wanted to pay belated tribute to the pastel and the pomp and frivolity and fun and everything that era could have been, I feel like this gown sums it up but still makes it elegant and bold. A delicious glossy raspberry lip with a baby pastel pink matte eyeshadow lewk, fluorescent oversized hoops, chunky bauble rings and maybe feather wraparound stilettos should finish off this gown.
  • Özgür Masur Spring 2021
    • On Taylor’s first big night at the Grammys where she won AOTY (2010) she wore blue. If she’s dressing with intention, this beautiful pearl-accented blue gown would be a beautiful bookend to that moment should she do the inconceivable and win the category for a third time she would be the first woman to do so. Undoubtedly, in slideshows of this momentous milestone in her career, journalists and reporters covering the award will include photographs of that previous instance. A side by side of Taylor in blue gowns, winning the Grammy’s top award over the course of a decade (+1 year) would be so compelling and symbolic of her growth and trajectory as a genre-spanning artist. I’d finish the look with petal pink glossy lips, metallic smoked out eyes, and gunmetal pearl accessories.
  • Oscar de la Renta Pre-Fall 2021
    • I genuinely have a good feeling about yellow. And not just because of Blondes In Yellow™ but because it would tie in neatly with Fearless (Taylor’s Version) which also y’know happened to be her very first album that won Album Of The Year. If Taylor did win the category on the 14th for folklore it would shock me if she didn’t reference her re-records project and her quest to regain ownership of her life’s work that has meant everything to her and to be awarded for the first time in the category for an album that she actually owns would underline her re-recording journey and folklore as a work beautifully. I’d actually love to see a strong overly matte red lip and eyeliner look here with maybe a low chignon and velvet black bow in her hair for styling.
  • Valentino Spring 2021 Couture
    • Sparkles and sequins in a neutral metallic are a Taylor Swift forever trademark. It’s part of her legacy. The looser fit feels appropriate to her current approach to silhouettes and I love the longer sleeves with the off-the-shoulder design. Veronica Lake waves pushed to one side, a plummy lip, and shimmery brown shadow should complete this lewk. And obviously Jimmy Choo patent gold platform sandals.

What do you think Taylor should wear to the Grammys, particularly given how potentially momentous it would be for her?

TAYLOR SWIFT STYLE – AMA PREDICTIONS

Another awards show, another potential opportunity for Taylor to (likely not) make a rare public appearance. The AMAs are set to air live on Sunday, November 22 and Taylor is nominated for four awards. Winning one would officially push her into the 30 mark and cement her legacy as the most awarded artist in AMA history.

While my guess is that if Taylor wins she’ll be accepting her awards via cellphone video, a girl can always dream of another red carpet appearance, particularly a rare one in support of folklore.

Historically (like a lot of award shows) Taylor has gone sparkly for the AMAs almost every single year she has attended. The one exception being her Michael Kors gree(eeeeeeeee)n gown in 2014.

This year, I wanted to equalize my choices between a classic Sequin Swift lewk as well as some more Elegant English Rose feels given that the vibe I get from folklore as of late leans rustic English Countryside-ish.

So, with that here we go.

  • Stella McCartney Resort 2021
At some point, I’m going to hit the nose on the head with a predicted Stella lewk. Mostly because obviously there’s a finite number of Stella lewks to choose from (unless of course Taylor opts to pull once again from the designer’s one-off sustainable 23 Old Bond collection as she did for her Rolling Stone cover). I made this select because she’s casual, free, and has a lot of vintage whimsy. The strips of mixed patterns looks like a carefully crafted gown made from leftovers of hand me down blankets you’d find in your grandmother’s attic – but in a charming, whimsical way that I feel pays homage to the rootsy vibes of folklore. Taylor would likely opt to finish this with brown platform heels like these and maybe a juicy glossy sheer plummy lip.
  • Balenciaga Fall 2020
Elegant, and timeless. A column gown like this has proven to look amazing on Taylor (see: 2014 Grammys in Gucci Première). But rendered in a beautiful, shimmering black it feels really mature and classy and appropriate for where she’s at now in her life. I especially love the mock neck and hope she’d accessorize with a sleek bun, her recently-favoured hoop earrings, a blue-red lip, and some gunmetal rings.
  • Oscar de la Renta Fall 2020
Quite easily my favourite of the bunch – though I know that’s blasphemous to say of your own predictions. In a post-Shamrock/Scooter Braun Round 2 world, this has “mad woman” vibes written all over it and alludes very neatly to the velvet Ralph Lauren dress she wears in the folklore album photoshoot. A low chignon, crawling gorgeous ear climbers, a stack of heavier statement rings, a dark berry lip, and sandals like those shown on the runway would be amazing. Thankyouverymuch.
  • Carolina Herrera Pre-Fall 2020
I wanted to choose something that felt like an English tea party. Not that I have any knowledge of what goes on at a tea party but the vibe I wanted was something a bit more proper and prim but that also had a touch of nature. I feel like in isolation, Taylor was drawn to and inspired by empty outdoor spaces and the roaming wilderness. Captivated by the loneliness but also the wonder that was there and the double-edged sword of that (How “exile” is exploring loneliness and “the lakes” symbolizing carving out a safe space to be with someone that you love). A gown dotted with delicate little blue flowers but also contrasted by dark tulle felt very much an encapsulation of those two opposing thoughts. I’d love to see a soft petal pink lip here and blush, shimmering light shadow, and minimal jewelry to just let the gown shine for itself.

What do you think Taylor would wear to the AMAs if she did indeed show up?

— Taylor accepted her AMAs via video conference wearing a black turtleneck in front of a Trippy Store zodiac tapestry.
