Taylor Swift Style – 2016 Met Gala

With the theme for this year’s Met Gala being “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology” it’s certain that attendees will either go the route of the obvious (lots of silver and metallics, things akin to robotics), dramatic (large, avant-garde gowns commanding attention but that don’t necessarily adhere to the literal idea of the theme) or the authentic but subtle (fashion created using new technologies as fitted to the theme that don’t necessarily look like an out-of-the-ordinary garment unless you know the story behind it).

While it’s probable that Taylor’s gown this year will be a custom, I couldn’t resist pulling these gowns as inspiration for her look. And yes, you’ll note that I did not include a certain French brand with the initials YSL ;). The reason being that Anna Wintour herself said she had seen sketches of Tay’s gown and wouldn’t be wearing YSL due to the departure of creative director Heidi Slimane.

So, here we go!

  • Giles Spring 2016
With Taylor’s affinity for dark, gothic-esque clothes and her new peroxide blonde hair, try and tell me that she wouldn’t style this with a dark berry lip and her tousled bleached tresses. This gown has so much going for it and perfectly fits the drama, the hugeness, and the “if you’re going to go there, go all out” approach that should be taken to Met Gala fashion.
  • Alexander McQueen Fall 2011
I personally would have been remiss if I excluded an Alexander McQueen confection from my predictions list. A pioneer, an adventurer, and a fearless designer in fashion I wanted to dig through the archives of the late designer to find something that I think Taylor would look fantastic in. The latest Sarah Burton-led collections have erred on the side of dreamy goddess more than techno deity, but I found this old pull from five years ago to be the perfect mix of dainty China doll made tough.
  • Iris van Herpen Fall 2016
This was my attempt at including an actual designer that truly embodies the theme this year. Iris van Herpen would be the perfect fit for this year’s Met and if Taylor doesn’t wear designs by this house, somebody should. Well known for their affinity for 3D printing and incorporating technological advances in machine fabricating techniques, this designer belongs at the 2016 Met Gala and who is to say that Taylor won’t bring their designs to life. She already did in the “Bad Blood” video, after all.
  • Armani Privé Fall 2015 Couture
This was my personal indulgence in the “dramatic but not authentic” category I mentioned above. While there’s nothing technologically advanced going on behind-the-scenes with this gown, I think Taylor would absolutely slay it. It would also be a rare opportunity to actually incorporate colour with her new style – which appears to be leaning more towards “ALL the black ALL the time!”

So! What do you think of my choices? Do you have a favourite? Do you have other ideas for what she’ll wear? Do you think I’m insane for not including Yves Saint Laurent?

Taylor Swift Style – 2016 iHeartRadio Awards

As a relatively new awards show (they began hosting these just two years ago!), I don’t anticipate Taylor wearing anything too serious or couture. For my predictions, I’m more focused on fun and statement-making ensembles.

Here we go!

  • Escada Fall 2016
    I know what you’re thinking.
“Sarah, wtf? That belt is terrible.”
    And yeah.
    Trust me.
    I know.
I said that to myself about a thousand times before I ultimately chose to include this jumpsuit. But picture a slimmer belt or even just sans buckle, with the same slicked back hair, some navy or even neon or white stiletto sandals and smoky/glittery eye makeup. Taylor’s body would look slamming in this jumpsuit and it’s equal parts fun with the multi-coloured bodice, but also fits in with her recent slew of chic and tailored candids.
  • J. Mendel Fall 2016
I went back and forth on this gown so many times. And while a huge part of me (the biased part of me) wanted to go with this green gown from the same collection, I just could not get the image of Taylor as a glowing, golden, lithe goddess in this slinky number. Especially after her outstanding presence at the Vanity Fair Oscars party in February, I think it’s pretty clear she could pull off this sexy gown with ease.
  • Saint Laurent Fall 2016
While I have serious doubts about Taylor actually wearing something from this collection, I decided to choose one of the more laidback pieces from YSL’s latest effort for a few reasons.
This awards show will in all likelihood be the final push from Taylor for the 1989 era. As her promise to deliver on 80s style for this era has been somewhat lacking, I can’t think of a more appropriate time to deliver some fashion inspired by that era. Especially after recently attending Lady Gaga’s 30th where the birthday girl herself wore something from this show.
  • Mugler Fall 2016
    Fashion forward killer bumblebee.
I would love to see Taylor wear more from this brand as well as colour! (I kind of personally have a thing for blondes in yellow [and orange]). Black accessories and a killer winged liner would finish this look off.

Which outfit do you think Taylor will wear? Or do you have your own designer you think she’ll don on Sunday night?

— Winner winner! Taylor did end up wearing a Saint Laurent look from the same collection I included in my predictions. Counting this as a win 😉

Taylor Swift Style – 2016 Grammys

Alright. Here we go. I swear, with each passing awards ceremony I try to cut it closer and closer with these predictions.

The
even-yeared Grammys for Taylor usually signify the beginning cusp of a
new aesthetic for the coming era. But with TS6 being an uncertain
release for the fall of this year, I wasn’t sure what theme to go with.

What immediately struck me, however, was sharp tailoring and a more mature style.

So here we go!

  • Alexandre Vauthier Spring 2016
    I
couldn’t shake the idea of Taylor potentially wearing something more
tailored, sexy, and mature. I found that completely encapsulated in this
v-neck jumpsuit by Alexandre Vauthier. The belting around the waist
    sealed it for me.
I’d love to see this styled with a serious smoky eye and a pair of Sophia Webster wing heels.
  • Versace Spring 2016
The idea of Taylor wearing a pared down suit to the red carpet has come to me before. Particularly in the form of this red Alexandre Vauthier suit
I predicted for the Brits last year that still to this day I cannot get
out of my mind. This military green shade of green with a bandeau would
make such a statement I don’t know what I’d do with myself.
Styled with slicked back hair, a thin body chain and gorgeous earrings would be the finishing touches.
  • Bibhu Mohapatra Spring 2016
    I
hemmed and hawed over this slot for about … a few hours. Quite
literally as I am typing this up, I just switched this dress so talk
about last minute. What originally took up space here was this J. Mendel Spring 2016 flowy piece.
But my desire to choose something more mature over something “expected”
won out over wanting to provide a more palatable option to you TSS-ers.

I picked this gown because of its simplicity, because of its
colour, and because I think it could symbolize a new mature beginning.
  • Marc Jacobs Spring 2016
I can’t get over how fierce this gown is. I love the colour, the flow, how amazing Taylor’s legs would look in it and how different it is from anything she’s ever worn. It’s like a fairy princess that tore her way through a thorny forest and all that remains of her dress is this deconstructed sheer navy gown.

My other runners-up for the evening include this white Alexandre Vauthier Spring 2016 gown (I just love the subtle skin-baring detail at the torso), this Spring 2016 Bibhu Mohapatra gown with an interesting neckline, and this lovely and haunting Vionnet Spring 2016 black gown.

What do you think of my choices, TSS-ers? Do you have a favourite, or do you have another designer you think Taylor will wear on Monday night?

— Veering completely left, instead of an elegant design as many of you thought my choices should have reflected, Taylor wore a hot pink and orange two-piece by Atelier Versace.

Taylor Swift Style – 2015 American Music Awards

Better late than never, right?

Following her Ashish rainbow outfit at the MTV VMAs,
I decided for my predictions for tonight’s American Music Awards
(whether Taylor does show up or not), to try and get a little unconventional with my choices — whether she actually shows up for the ceremony or not.

This is an awards show where historically Taylor has opted for either gold or silver in a shortened hemline. Last year, saw the glorious Emerald Gown that as owner of Taylor Swift Style I had been praying for for ages.

So here we go!

  • Delpozo Spring 2016
    This
is likely the choice that will have TSS-ers seriously side-eyeing me. I
get it. It’s a really “out there” design for Taylor, but taking into
consideration the sequinned jogging suit we saw her serve up with
confidence just a few months ago, I think the beautiful and unique
structure of this Delpozo piece is equal parts drama, intrigue, and skin
that have summed up the typical 1989 aesthetic thus far. Fun heels, yellow statement earrings, hair slicked back and a nude lip would finish this off.
  • Mugler Spring 2016
    I
chose this mini almost entirely for that beautiful colour. I’m a
hardcore fan of a blonde in orange and Taylor has never worn orange to a
major awards show. I like the maturity factor of the suit-like
silhouette and how she could make it fun with geometric heels and a bold
    smoky eye.
  • Naeem Khan Spring 2016
This is probably the most Swiftian of all my choices. It’s a metallic, sparkly gown. And perhaps it might be too akin to her Gucci Gown from the 2014 Grammys, but as the nights leading nominee it would be an eyecatching disco-ball meets gladiator statement. Dramatic earrings, and I’m sure a red lip would complement this well, though I think a deep magenta would also be a great alternative.
  • Philipp Plein Spring 2016
I know. It’s really low-cut. But tie the hair back, add some strappy heels that go to the mid-calf, sew up the neckline perhaps just to the sternum and tell me Taylor wouldn’t look insanely hot in this deconstructed menswear-inspired club piece that’s akin to her “Blank Space” tour outfit!

What do you think of my choices TSS-ers? Which of my picks is your favourite, or do you have a runway choice of your own?

— Taylor unfortunately didn’t end up attending the 2015 AMAs.

Taylor Swift Style – 2015 MTV VMAs

When considering a theme for this round of red carpet predictions, I could only think that with summer award shows come short hemlines, bright colours and at the MTV VMAs, a little bit of edge.

  • Cushnie et Ochs Resort 2016
With each passing red carpet, I find that I’m going to continue to predict a Cushnie et Ochs number until Taylor finally gives in to the brand’s signature sizzling cutouts and sex appeal that would match perfectly with her maturing image for this era. I can imagine Taylor shortening the hemline on this beautiful little purple number and styling with silver metallic accessories, a silvery smoky eye and some killer amethyst earrings.
  • David Koma Resort 2016
I’ve been a fan of David Koma’s signature sporty/fun styles for awhile now and I think this little number would perfectly mix the edge of the MTV VMAs with a bit of an 80s theme via its nod to disco, courtesy of its reflective beading. A bright pair of strappy sandals in bright blue or lilac and a bare neckline would suit this mini well.
  • Peter Pilotto Spring 2015
When I imagine colour and fun on the red carpet, two brands immediately spring to mind: Clover Canyon and Peter Pilotto. While less “out there” than the Koma, I think this would be an easy and fun summer award dress. This mini would look killer with bright orange statement heels, simple coral stud earrings and an orange or pink lip.
  • Mugler Resort 2016
There was a period where I battled between several Mugler numbers. Specifically, Looks 6 and 8 from this same collection. Ultimately, I went with my gut and picked this intriguing wrap skirt dress that would seriously show off Taylor’s waist and hips.
First, for its pop of colour, secondly for the short hemline and thirdly because the geometric patterning across the bodice creates a futuristic/modern effect that I dig. Taylor should style this with a pink lip, killer heels like these FANTASTIC ones from Nicholas Kirkwood and a raw stone statement ring.

What do you think of my picks for the MTV VMAs? Which one is your fave or do you think she’ll wear something really different?
