TAYLOR SWIFT STYLE — 2020 GOLDEN GLOBES

Taylor has attended the Golden Globes on two previous occasions, both times wearing a full-length ball gown. I fully anticipate a very formal, very princess look on the Globe red carpet. With that in mind, I fell back on what I would consider more “safe” designers and dramatic but classically beautiful silhouettes. I don’t anticipate the Globes being an opportunity where Taylor will experiment or try something new or edgy or different. I expect this to be a night with a full-length tulle gown.

That said, of course, I couldn’t help but let my imagination get away from me a bit.

Here we go.

  • J. Mendel Spring 2020
Classic, soft, and a slight homage to the world of dance (and by extension, musicals and theatre) with this ballet slipper pink gown. An old Taylor standby designer, this is everything lovely and feminine and delicate. I’d love to see some huge purple gemstone knocker earrings and a high gloss berry lip with this.
  • Alexander McQueen Resort 2020
You’ll see where I quickly diverged away from traditional princess here. Set against a sheer black base, this look is little bit edgier, a little bit harder. The structure at the shoulders provides strength and the allover floral print is very Taylor indeed. I hope we get a strong smoky eye here and a wash of red stain at the lips.
  • Oscar de la Renta Spring 2020
Back on the princess track. Given her hot OdlR streak, I wanted to provide an easy potential lob that would make for a very slideshow look indeed. The shade of blue would offset Taylor’s eyes beautifully. She has also opted for colour on both previous occasions she attended this event so I’m hoping for another colourful outing — hence why three of these looks are a colour.
  • Sally LaPointe Pre-Fall 2020
One of the most memorable recent fashion moments for me at the Globes was Emma Stone’s Lanvin jumpsuit back in 2015. Given that it’s still making an impression five years later tells me that sometimes going for a jumpsuit at an event where gowns are the norm is how you stand out. This look is a little bit disco and a lot of glam. Which is perfect because Taylor Magpie Swift has not yet met a sequin she doesn’t love. The neckline is also a fun continuation/callback to the asymmetric jumpsuit she wore at the Women In Music event. This jumpsuit is begging for a pair of strappy sandals, ear climbers, and pale pink makeup.

TAYLOR SWIFT STYLE — AMERICAN MUSIC AWARDS

While Taylor has had a history of going short and mini at the AMAs (just look at last year’s disco Balmain ensemble for reference) given that Taylor will be receiving the incredibly prestigious Artist of the Decade, it was my thought that she would take the opportunity and go serious with a full-length moment.

My choices aimed to strike a balance between the (albeit inconsistent) aesthetic of the Lover era with choices that still honour and celebrate Taylor’s evolution in style over the last decade.

I hope I got it.

Here we go!

  • Iris Van Herpen Spring 2020
    – Just give me a moment to pick myself off the floor. I haven’t yet met an IVH creation that hasn’t taken my breath away and this fluttering sunset moment is no different. Iris creations are works of art and I felt the colours represented here are an ode to the Lover album while also a nod to the princess-like gowns of Taylor’s past — just executed in an incredibly elegant way appropriate for an almost 30 year old. Stick a fork in me if Taylor ever wears something akin to this.
  • Halpern Spring 2020

    – Out of all my suit choices (and if you watched the Making Of video you know there were a-plenty) this one felt the most alluring to Taylor’s historic magpie soul. Taylor has never met a sequin she didn’t like and she’s been on quite the hot streak with menswear inspired suits (much to the fatigue of some, I know). She’d cut a sleek silhouette in this and would of course send an incredibly strong symbol to viewers and attendees about how far she has come since her sundress and cowgirl boot days to stand on the AMA stage and receive its highest honour. A dark berry lip and a crushed glittery metallic smoky eye would be great here, if you please.
  • Elie Saab Spring 2020

    – I very rarely acquiesce to fan requests but on a night like this when Taylor is honouring her decade long journey in the music industry, it felt apt to include an old red carpet standby designer as an option for this predictions post. While a little boring and expected, Elie Saab gowns are consistently pretty and Taylor wears their sparkly, classic, princess styles incredibly well. I chose this more daring one (Taylor would likely wear a much stronger nude lining underneath) because of its subtle rainbow iridescence — another Lover nod in nostalgic packaging, no?
  • Oscar de la Renta Spring 2020

    – While my first IVH choice evoked the colours of sunset, this one is all about sunrise. Delicate, frothy, irreverently girly. It has everything that the Lover aesthetic originally promised us from the moment Taylor stepped out in that pink and yellow sorbet gown by J. Mendel at the Time 100 Gala (the best she’s looked all era, am I right?). This gown is everything we have been yearning and promised for in this era. And on such a huge night of recognition for Taylor, it seems like the right time to get it, don’t you think?

What do you think of my choices? Do you have a favourite or a particular designer you hope Taylor will wear for the show?

TAYLOR SWIFT STYLE — TEEN CHOICE AWARDS

It’s been a spell since Taylor last attended the Teen Choice Awards. Her last appearance was five years ago when she wore a minty green (!!!) crop top and skirt set

Given the inherent youthful nature of the awards show, the anticipated fashion is equally as laidback, fun, and typically colourful. I don’t expect Taylor to take herself too seriously (a couture moment or full length gown would be very remiss and at odds here with the expected dress code) when she attends the show to receive her icon surfboard (yes, her attendance is 100% confirmed). I fully expect a cheerful pastel moment — hence the cohesion in my choices.

If Taylor chooses none of these, I would be very surprised if her ultimate decision was not: some kind of sherbet/pastel tone, short, and fluffy/flowy in fabric. She has seemed to steer mostly away from stiff fabrics in favour of chiffon and tulle for the most part this year when it comes to her red carpet style.

With that, on we go!

  • Sachin & Babi Resort 2020
    – This is the only look that I had no other pulls/alternates from the collection and was the constant “must include” choice when I was pulling these predictions together. It’s incredibly fun and vibrant and colourful, but is also the most elegant and less “frou frou” or cotton candy of all my choices. To me, it speaks to a woman attending a youth’s event, paying homage to the theme, while also being beautifully dressed. It’s classy colourful. I absolutely need a pair of neon or vibrant heels to pair with this dress. A metallic, white, or black pump will not do.
  • Stella McCartney Spring 2019
    – So, as I mentioned, the Sachin & Babi dress above was the only one on my list with no direct alternates within its own collection. In this instance, the alternate was Look 5 — a tie dye mini high-neck skater number. I opted out of it because it was too unbearably twee, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Taylor wore something similar to it. With this pastel mint green (!!!!!!!) option, I got beautiful garden nymph vibes. Here, a white or metallic sandal would be acceptable. Plus a ton of powdery pink blush and coppery eyes.
  • Chanel Resort 2020
    – Mom, I am a rich man. Hot off the heels of her tweed and herringbone and blazers from Vogue, I wanted to include a Lover-aesthetically pleasing suit option in my predictions. With the interview and “The Man” in mind, it makes Taylor’s suit ensemble from the “ME!” music video and her Cher cross-stitch art from the “You Need To Calm Down” video make so much more sense, doesn’t it? For those curious, Look 48 from this collection was my Chanel alternate. As another allusion to the “ME!” music video, I thought the pattern on the dress looked stunningly similar to the technicolour brick road present in that music video which introduced us to the look of Lover
  • Giambattista Valli Fall 2019
    – While the mullet detail of the dress does take it a bit over the top and well into “too mature” territory … I couldn’t resist. My alternate, Look 18, is a little more form-fitting and a little bit shorter. But I couldn’t get over the flow and the movement of this look. So here it stays. Plus I liked the interplay between pink and blue — much like Taylor’s latest affinity for switching between temporary dyes.

The Runners Up

And, of course, there were still even more looks that couldn’t make it into the final selection. They are:

What do you think of my choices? Which is your favourite? What designer do you hope Taylor wears on Sunday?

TAYLOR SWIFT STYLE — MET GALA

Before we begin with breaking down my predictions, I want to make sure we’re all on the same page about the gala’s theme this year.

The theme is “Camp: Notes on Fashion.” And we aren’t referring to the tent and gathering around a fire type of camp. The reference here is to Susan Sontag’s same-named essay. Camp is the unorthodox, the ugly turned art, the hyperbolic made banal. As Sontag wrote: “the essence of Camp is its love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration.”

I hope with this in mind, my choices are filtered within this “Bigger Is Not Better, Biggest Is Better” mentality and make a little bit more sense.

Aka: The first TSS-er who comments “Taylor would never wear these” wins a prize. And the prize is Lady Gaga’s Kermit poncho.

And with that … ONWARD!

  • VIktor & Rolf Spring 2019 Couture
I will be thoroughly surprised if we don’t see one gown from this collection on the red carpet. This entire meme-driven puffed tulle ballgown collection is the epitome of Camp. Ridiculous, humourous, big, bold, and amazing. Everything Camp should be. I suggest styling with a topknot, hot pink lips, a glitter manicture, and perhaps some body glitter. Yaaaaas.
  • Dolce & Gabbana Fall 2019
This fur-lined robe turned gown should be styled with piles of pearls and metallic glittery makeup. It’s an elegant, luxurious, hedonistic version of Camp. Over the top in an old Hollywood glamour kind of way. Plus that colour would be divine on Taylor — as we’ve already seen
  • Tomo Koizumi Fall 2019
Another entire collection that is Camp itself. Look 4 with its mini length and heart design also felt very Taylor but this full length rainbow light brite beauty felt more worthy of the Met Gala.
  • Moschino Fall 2019
Another alternate of Bigger Is Better Camp and more to the … tacky 80s Barbie camp. If there’s a brand that knows this theme well it’s Jeremy Scott and Moschino. While Gucci is the brand of the night, I fully expect some Moschino and D&G looks to crop up. The big hair, ostentatious bows, overkill jewelry, and the gloves are all too deliciously tacky to resist. And we all know Taylor loves a metallic moment.

What do you think of my choices? Who do you think Taylor will wear to the Met Gala?
